Mark Heffley built the StarGazer to prove he was a genius, but it ended up trapping his daughter Kasey in another dimension and nearly destroying Montreal.

Mark Heffley literally built this machine called the StarGazer just to prove he was some kind of genius, and he didn't care who got hurt. His own daughter Kasey got trapped in the theaneb dimension when he fired it up—which says everything you need to know about him.

When they activated it in episode 3, things went downhill FAST. The machine tore open reality in Montreal and attracted this massive interdimensional being. The tear got bigger and more unstable the more Mark pushed forward, and it was basically one guy's ego almost destroying an entire city.

Pat, Sarah, and Matthew teamed up to shut it down. Pat had no idea what he was doing half the time, but they managed anyway. Matthew sacrificed himself in episode 4 to stop it for real. They saved Montreal, but at a huge cost—the interdimensional being warned them the StarGazer had started a chain reaction that would keep causing problems.
